It was built by Sultan Qaitbay on the foundations of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, and some of its stones came from the fallen lighthouse itself. Climb to the upper terraces for sea views and the harbour skyline. Fishermen, cafes and seafood restaurants line the nearby waterfront, which is lovely near sunset.
