October to April is the best season, and early morning visits avoid both the heat and the largest crowds. The Grand Egyptian Museum is pleasant to visit in the afternoon.
Two days are ideal, one for the pyramids, Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum and one for Saqqara, Dahshur and Memphis. Add a night in Bahariya if you want desert scenery.
The Giza Plateau is about 15 to 20 km from downtown Cairo, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road depending on traffic. Most hotels and tour operators include transfers.
