Minya Governorate tour packages explore the Bride of Upper Egypt, a Nile valley region rich in lesser-known ancient sites. The remains of Tell el-Amarna, the short-lived capital of the heretic king Akhenaten, lie on the east bank, while the cliff tombs of Beni Hasan and the necropolis of Tuna el-Gebel show different eras of Egyptian art. The provincial capital Minya has a pleasant corniche and Ottoman buildings. Visits are best between November and March, when Upper Egypt is comfortable, and are often arranged with a local guide.

November to March is most comfortable for exploring open archaeological sites. From May to September the heat is intense.
Two days allow Beni Hasan, Amarna and Tuna el-Gebel with time for the town. A single long day trip is possible from Cairo only for the main highlights.
Minya is about 250 km south of Cairo and takes roughly 3.5 hours by road or train. Many travellers see it on the way to Luxor.
