November to March is the best season, with cool mornings for the temples. Summers are extremely hot.
One day is enough for Abydos and the monasteries, usually as an excursion from Luxor. Two days allow time for Akhmim and the city.
Abydos is about 160 km north of Luxor and takes roughly 2.5 hours by road. Many Nile cruise guests visit it on a long day trip.
