Dire Dawa tour packages visit Ethiopia’s second chartered city, a lively commercial town in the east that grew around the Addis Ababa to Djibouti railway in the early twentieth century. The city is split by a seasonal river into the old Megala quarter, with its Arabic-style market arcades, and the more European-style Kezira district. The prehistoric Porc-Epic Cave, in the hills above, has produced Stone Age tools and ochre. Dire Dawa is a convenient stop on the way to Harar, with warm weather and excellent fruit.
