Somali tour packages are not generally available. The region in eastern Ethiopia is a vast, arid lowland of herders, camels and wide horizons, populated by Ethiopian Somalis. The regional capital Jijiga is a busy trading town near the border with Somaliland, and Gode sits on the Shebelle River in the south. The landscape includes thorn scrub, seasonal rivers and ancient rock art in the hills. Many governments advise against travel to most of the Somali Region because of security risks along the borders, so it is not a destination for a holiday.

October to March
Amharic (with Oromo, Tigrinya and Somali widely spoken)
Ethiopian Birr (ETB)

We do not recommend travel here at present. Historically October to February is the cooler dry season.
We do not advise itineraries in the Somali Region at present, so there is no suggested trip length.
Jijiga can be reached by road from Harar or Dire Dawa, but official advisories advise against travel across much of the region.
