The region was created in 2019, with its capital at Sefwi Wiawso, a hilly town in the heart of cocoa country. Bia National Park, close to the Ivory Coast border, protects dense forest with elephants, bongo antelope, monkeys and rare birds, and the surrounding Bia Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO site. The Sefwi people celebrate colourful festivals, and local guides can lead walks through cocoa farms and forest.
