Garissa County tourism is limited, and most visitors only pass through this dry north-eastern region on the road from Nairobi to the coast. Garissa town sits on the banks of the Tana River, with a busy market, a mix of Somali and Kenyan cultures and mosques with local architecture. Camel herding is a major way of life, and the river supports small farms. The county includes remote reserves such as Rahole National Reserve. Most governments advise against travel to Garissa because of security risks near the Somali border, so please check current advisories before booking.

January to March and July to September are the driest and coolest periods. Garissa is hot throughout the year, with temperatures often above 35 degrees Celsius.
This is not a standard tourist circuit, so tours rarely stay more than a night. Any visit needs careful planning with a local operator.
Garissa is around 350 kilometres east of Nairobi by road, and there are limited flights. It is best reached by an experienced guide.
