Mwingi National Reserve is a quiet reserve on the Tana River that is often visited alongside Kora National Park, and South Kitui National Reserve adjoins Tsavo East.Kitui town is a bustling farm market with craft stalls, and the surrounding hills offer views over the dry plains. Facilities are modest, but the people are welcoming.

June to October and January to February are driest and best for wildlife. The rainy periods are March to May and November to December.
One to two days suit Kitui town and one of the reserves. It works as an add-on to Tsavo or Kora rather than a stand-alone trip.
Kitui is about three hours by road from Nairobi. The reserves are reached by 4x4 and are best visited with an operator who knows the area.
