Shela tour packages centre on a quiet village at the southern end of Lamu Island, with a wide golden beach, huge dunes and old Swahili houses converted into guesthouses. It is a 40-minute walk from Lamu Town along the shore, or a short boat ride. Restaurants serve fresh fish and curry, and sunset dhow cruises depart from the jetty. The beach is long and uncrowded, and low tide is the best time to walk it.
