June to October and January to February are the driest and make roads easier. Heat is intense on the lake and desert, so many travellers prefer the cooler months from June to August.
Allow at least six to seven days for a northern overland circuit, as distances are very long and roads rough. Marsabit town alone needs two days.
Marsabit is about 560 kilometres north of Nairobi by road, with limited flights to Marsabit airstrip. Loiyangalani is reached by 4x4 or by chartered light aircraft.
