Chuka tour packages use this friendly highland town as a base for exploring the forests and tea farms around Mount Kenya. The town has a busy market selling bananas, coffee and avocados, and local guides arrange hikes to the Mount Kenya forest edge. Chuka is on the main road between Embu and Meru, around four hours from Nairobi, and has banks, simple hotels and supermarkets. Visit between January and March for clear views of the mountain.
