Drâa-Tafilalet tour packages lead into Morocco’s south-east, a landscape of palm oases, river valleys, fortified kasbahs and Saharan dunes. The golden dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga are the classic place for camel treks and desert camps, while the clay village of Aït Benhaddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and film location. Other highlights include the cliffs of the Todra Gorge, the Dadès Valley and the film-studio town of Ouarzazate. Autumn to spring is the best season, as summer heat is fierce.

October to April is ideal, with warm days and cool nights. Summer is extremely hot, and winter nights are cold.
A three-day trip from Marrakech can reach Merzouga, and four to five days give time for Aït Benhaddou, Todra and Dadès at a better pace.
Merzouga is roughly 560 km from Marrakech, a long full-day drive, usually broken up with a stop at Ouarzazate or Dadès. Most travellers book a guided tour.
