Sokoto tour packages explore the spiritual capital of Nigeria’s Muslim north and the seat of the Sokoto Caliphate, founded by Usman dan Fodio in the early nineteenth century. The city of Sokoto has the Sultan’s palace, the Sultan Bello Mosque and the tomb of Shehu Usman dan Fodio, as well as a museum on the caliphate’s history. Nearby Wurno was an important caliphate capital, and the savannah around the city is dotted with historic walls and mosques. Security in the north-west is a concern, and many governments advise against travel, so this region is suitable only for specialist visits with local guidance.
