Eastern Cape tour packages combine a malaria-free Big Five safari with some of South Africa’s wildest coastline. Addo Elephant National Park is home to more than a thousand elephants, while Tsitsikamma National Park offers forest walks, a famous suspension bridge and bungee jumping at Bloukrans. Surfers head to Jeffreys Bay, and the green mountains of Hogsback are said to have inspired Tolkien.Further north-east lies the Wild Coast, the Xhosa homeland of rolling hills, round huts and empty beaches where Nelson Mandela was born and raised.

The Eastern Cape is pleasant year-round; spring and autumn, from September to November and March to May, offer mild weather. Malaria-free game viewing in Addo works at any time, though summer can be hot.
Four to five days cover Gqeberha, Addo and Tsitsikamma well. Add two more for Hogsback or the Wild Coast.
Fly into Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) via Johannesburg or Cape Town. Many travellers also drive here from Cape Town along the Garden Route, which takes around eight hours.
