Free State tourism offers a quiet, wide-open side of South Africa, a province of golden grasslands, sandstone cliffs and tidy small towns. The star attraction is Golden Gate Highlands National Park, where eroded rock formations glow amber at sunset and eland, zebra and black wildebeest graze the valleys. Nearby, the artists’ village of Clarens is known for craft beer, galleries and mountain views.Bloemfontein, the judicial capital, adds museums and Anglo-Boer War history, while Parys sits on the Vaal River beside the Vredefort Dome meteorite crater.
