Sun City is a resort complex with a wave pool, water park, golf courses and casino, while the neighbouring Pilanesberg National Park sits in an extinct volcano crater and holds the Big Five. Further north, the Madikwe Game Reserve gives a more remote, malaria-free safari.Close to Johannesburg, Hartbeespoort Dam has a cableway and a popular elephant sanctuary. Most areas are low-risk for malaria.

May to September is dry and best for wildlife viewing in Pilanesberg and Madikwe. Summer is hot and good for Sun City water parks.
Two to three days suit Sun City and Pilanesberg. Add a night or two if you want to include Madikwe or Hartbeespoort.
Sun City and Pilanesberg are about two hours by road from OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg, and transfers are easily arranged. There is also a small airstrip at Pilanesberg.
