Katavi Region tour packages go to one of Tanzania’s wildest, least-visited areas. Katavi National Park is a remote wilderness of floodplains and woodland where huge herds of buffalo and hippos gather in the dry season, along with lions, crocodiles and elephants. Few vehicles come here, so safaris feel completely private.Mpanda is the regional town, and Karema on Lake Tanganyika preserves a historic fort and a church from the 19th-century missionary era. Mahale Mountains National Park, on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, adds chimpanzee trekking.

June to October is the dry season, when hippos and buffalo crowd the remaining waterholes. Roads can be impassable during the rains.
Allow three to four nights for Katavi National Park. Add three more nights if you plan to trek chimpanzees in Mahale.
Fly by light aircraft from Arusha, Dar es Salaam or Mahale to Katavi's airstrips. Mpanda has a small airport, but road access is difficult.
