Kigoma Region tour packages are for travellers who want a wild corner of Tanzania on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, the world’s second-deepest lake. Gombe Stream National Park is the site of Jane Goodall’s pioneering chimpanzee research, and guided treks take visitors close to wild chimpanzees.Ujiji is where Henry Morton Stanley is said to have greeted Dr Livingstone in 1871, and Kigoma is the lively port town. Clear water, sandy beaches and quiet fishing villages round off the region, which is far from the usual safari trail.

May to October is the dry season and the best for chimpanzee trekking. The wetter months are green but trails are slippery.
Two to three days cover Kigoma, Ujiji and Gombe. Add more days if you plan to go on to Mahale.
Kigoma has an airport with flights from Dar es Salaam and Mwanza, and a railway line from Dar es Salaam. Gombe is reached by boat from Kigoma in about 1.5 hours.
