Matmata tour packages visit a hill village where Berber families built homes in large pits dug into the soft rock, with rooms around a central courtyard to stay cool in summer. Some houses are open to visitors, and one of them was used as Luke Skywalker’s childhood home in the first Star Wars film. Women prepare bread and tea in the courtyards, and the lunar landscape of ridges and canyons all around is striking. Wear sturdy shoes.
