Tataouine Governorate tour packages explore Tunisia’s deep south, where the Sahara meets a landscape of bare mountains, fortified granaries and Berber hill villages. The ksour, or hill-top storehouses, at Ksar Ouled Soltane and Ksar Hadada are well known to film fans, as they featured in Star Wars, and the hilltop villages of Chenini and Douiret have cave homes and white mosques. The area is hot in summer, so October to April is the best time. Some desert zones in the far south need permits, so travel with a guide.
