Badakhshan tourism is about high mountains, rare minerals and remote valleys in the far north-east, where the Hindu Kush meets the Pamirs. The province is famed for the lapis lazuli mines of the Kokcha valley, worked for thousands of years, and for the Wakhan Corridor, a narrow strip of high pasture that stretches towards China. The regional capital, Faizabad, sits on the Kokcha river, and Ishkashim marks the gateway to Wakhan. Travel here has always been physically demanding, with long roads, high passes and very basic stays. Summer is the only practical season for the high valleys. Due to ongoing security concerns, India’s Ministry of External Affairs and most governments currently advise against travel to Badakhshan.
