Qala-i-Naw is the provincial capital of Badghis, a small town surrounded by steppe hills and pistachio woods. Among the places to visit in Qala-i-Naw are its busy bazaar, where dried fruit, wool and carpets are traded, and the green hillsides that lie within easy reach. Visitors who stop here can see how rural northern Afghanistan lives, with shepherds, orchards and a mix of Pashtun, Tajik and Turkmen communities. Facilities are basic and the town is best seen in spring.
