Baghlan tourism combines industrial heritage with ancient archaeology in the foothills of the Hindu Kush. The provincial capital Pul-i-Khumri lies on the road between Kabul and the north, famous for its river, old textile mill and dramatic mountain backdrop. Nearby, the hilltop site of Surkh Kotal preserves a Kushan-era temple linked to the great king Kanishka. The province also has productive farmland and rivers running down from the Salang range. Spring and early autumn are mild and pleasant, and the area works as a stop on journeys between Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif. Most governments, including India’s, currently advise against travel to Baghlan, so check official advisories before making any plans.
