Balkh tourism is anchored by Mazar-i-Sharif, the largest city in the north and a major centre of Persian culture. The dazzling Blue Mosque, also known as the Shrine of Hazrat Ali, draws crowds during Nowruz, when the new year is marked with flag-raising and festivities. Nearby, the ancient city of Balkh, once called Bactra, was a capital of the Zoroastrian and Buddhist worlds and is traditionally the birthplace of the poet Rumi. Cotton, pomegranate and pistachio plains surround the province. Spring is the best season for travel and festivals. Because of the security situation, India’s Ministry of External Affairs and many other governments advise against visiting Balkh for now.
