Shahr-e Zohak tour packages visit a spectacular ruined fortress that guards the eastern end of the Bamyan Valley. Built on a rust-coloured cliff at the meeting point of two rivers, the citadel dates from the 6th to 13th centuries, with walls and towers climbing the rock. Legend links it with the evil king Zohak of Persian epic poetry. Scrambling around the ruins gives long views across fields and cliffs.
