Daykundi tourism is for the curious traveller who wants to see the Hazarajat, the high central heartland of Afghanistan. The mountainous province, formed in 2004, is known for its handicrafts, its hospitable Hazara communities and wide valleys in districts such as Sang-e Takht and Kijran. The capital Nili sits in a green valley and serves as the main town. Facilities are very limited and journeys over high passes are slow, but the spring scenery is remarkable. Winters are severe and many roads close. Official advice from India and many other governments is to avoid travel to Daykundi at present.
