Farah tourism covers the dry south-west, where the Farah Rud river flows through desert plains towards the Sistan basin. The provincial capital stands near an ancient citadel on a trade route that Alexander the Great is said to have used during his eastern campaign. The province is known for pomegranates, melons, dried fruit and hand-woven carpets, and its landscapes of sand, red plains and green oases have a stark beauty. Summers are scorching, so spring and autumn are the only sensible seasons. Due to ongoing security concerns, India’s Ministry of External Affairs and most governments currently advise against travel to Farah.
