Faryab tourism opens a window onto Uzbek and Turkmen life across the north-western steppe. The capital Maymana is an old market town with mud-brick lanes and a long tradition of weaving, while Andkhoy is known for its Karakul sheepskins and fine carpets. Horse culture is strong, and buzkashi, the national horseback sport, is played in winter. The wide plains turn green in spring and are golden by early summer. Tourist facilities are limited, so the province suits experienced overland travellers with a strong interest in Central Asian culture. Please note that travel to Faryab is currently discouraged by most governments, including India’s, because of security risks.
