Ghazni tourism centres on a city that was the capital of the great Ghaznavid empire in the 11th century and was named Islamic Capital of Culture for 2013. Two towering victory minarets, a citadel, the tomb of Sultan Mahmud and a museum of Islamic art reflect that golden age. The province lies on the main highway between Kabul and Kandahar at about 2,200 metres, so summers are mild and winters cold. Spring is the best time to visit the gardens and ruins. Most governments, including India’s, currently advise against travel to Ghazni, so check official advisories before making any plans.
