Helmand tourism relates to the long Helmand River, which turns the province’s desert plains into fertile farmland. Lashkar Gah, the capital, stands where the Arghandab joins the Helmand, close to the great fortress of Qala-i-Bost and its monumental arch from the Ghaznavid age. Further north, the Kajaki Dam, built with American help in the mid-20th century, creates a large lake and supplies power. Summer heat is intense, so winter and spring are preferable for visits. Travel advisories from India and most other governments currently recommend against visiting Helmand.
