Kandahar tourism is rooted in a city that Alexander the Great is said to have founded and that became the first capital of modern Afghanistan under Ahmad Shah Durrani in 1747. The blue-domed Shrine of the Cloak, the tomb of Ahmad Shah Durrani and the rock-cut Chil Zina steps are the main attractions. Kandahar is also famous for pomegranates, grapes and dried fruit. The climate is hot and dry, so October to March is the more comfortable time to travel. Most governments, including India’s, currently advise against travel to Kandahar, so check official advisories before making any plans.
