Nangarhar tourism covers the warm, green south-east, where the Kabul River runs towards the Khyber Pass. The capital Jalalabad, founded in the 16th century under the Mughal emperor Akbar, is famed for oranges, sugarcane and old gardens, while Hadda preserves the ruins of a major Buddhist monastic centre. The Spin Ghar mountains rise to the south, and Torkham is the main border crossing to Pakistan. Winter is mild and pleasant, whereas summer is extremely hot. Because of the security situation, India’s Ministry of External Affairs and many other governments advise against visiting Nangarhar for now.
