Nuristan tourism is about one of the most distinctive mountain cultures in Afghanistan. Known as Kafiristan until its people converted to Islam in the 1890s, the region has steep forested valleys, tall wooden houses and a tradition of fine woodcarving. The provincial capital Parun and the old settlement of Kamdesh lie deep in the Hindu Kush, far from the main roads. Walnut, pine and cedar woods cover the slopes, and snow lingers late. Travel is slow and difficult, and summer is the only practical season. Official advice from India and many other governments is to avoid travel to Nuristan at present.
