Paktia tourism is mainly a glimpse of Pashtun life in the south-eastern highlands. The provincial capital Gardez sits in a high basin at around 2,300 metres, with an old fortress at its heart and snow-covered mountains around. The province is known for strong tribal traditions, walnut and apple orchards, and the cold winters typical of its altitude. Zurmat and Sayed Karam are other notable districts. Facilities are limited. Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Due to ongoing security concerns, India’s Ministry of External Affairs and most governments currently advise against travel to Paktia.
