Salang Pass tour packages lead to the main road crossing over the Hindu Kush, linking Kabul with the north. At about 3,400 metres, the pass has a tunnel of around 2.6 km, built by Soviet engineers in the 1960s. Steep hairpins, avalanche galleries and snowy slopes make it dramatic, and in summer the green hillsides are lovely. The highway can be very busy, and winter conditions are severe.
