Sar-e Pol tourism covers a hilly province in northern Afghanistan, where the Balkhab river winds through gorges and green valleys. The name means head of the bridge, and the capital Sar-e Pul sits on the river that irrigates its orchards and wheat fields. Uzbek, Hazara and Tajik communities share the region, which is known for weaving, livestock and Sufi shrines. Facilities are few and roads are rough, so it suits travellers with a strong interest in rural northern Afghanistan. Official advice from India and many other governments is to avoid travel to Sar-e Pol at present.
