Gansu tourism follows the Hexi Corridor, the narrow strip of oases that carried Silk Road traders between China and the west. Dunhuang is the highlight, with the Mogao Caves full of Buddhist murals and the Mingsha Dunes with the Crescent Moon Spring. Jiayuguan marks the western end of the Ming Great Wall, and the striped hills of Zhangye Danxia glow in the late sun. Xiahe’s Labrang Monastery is a major Tibetan centre. Allow six to seven days. May to October is the best time.

April to June and September to October
Mandarin Chinese
Chinese Yuan Renminbi (CNY)
Tourist visa required (apply at a Chinese visa application centre)
May to October is best, with September ideal for clear skies and comfortable days. Winters are very cold in the desert.
Five to seven days cover Dunhuang, Jiayuguan and Zhangye. Add two days for Lanzhou and Xiahe.
Distances are large, so most travellers combine trains along the Hexi Corridor with domestic flights, for example from Xi'an or Lanzhou to Dunhuang.
