Guizhou tourism rewards travellers who like waterfalls, mountains and minority villages away from mainstream China. Huangguoshu is the biggest waterfall in Asia, and you can walk behind its curtain of water. The Miao village of Xijiang has thousands of wooden stilted houses and lively festivals, while Zhenyuan is a riverside town of old bridges and temples. The capital Guiyang is a cool summer refuge. Four to five days cover the main stops, and spring to autumn is the best time. Roads are hilly, so allow extra time.

April to October is good, with the waterfalls at their fullest in June to August. Guizhou is also cool in summer compared with the rest of southern China.
Four days cover Guiyang, Huangguoshu and Xijiang. A fifth day adds Zhenyuan.
Guiyang has an international-standard airport with flights from Guangzhou, Shanghai and other hubs, and high-speed trains link it to Guangzhou and Chongqing.
