Wuhan is the busy capital, with the Yellow Crane Tower, East Lake and lively street food, while Yichang is the base for the Three Gorges Dam and Yangtze cruises. In the north-west the Wudang Mountains are the cradle of Taoist martial arts, and the forests of Shennongjia offer cool summer hiking. A four to five day itinerary pairs Wuhan with either Yichang or Wudang. April to May and autumn from September to November suit this itinerary best.
