Liaoning tour packages explore north-east China’s industrial heartland, which also has a surprising amount of history and coastline. In Shenyang the Mukden Palace is a smaller cousin of Beijing’s Forbidden City, built by the early Qing rulers. Dalian is a tidy harbour city with beaches, squares and fresh seafood, and Dandong faces North Korea across the Yalu River. Summer is the best time for the coast, while autumn works well for Shenyang. Plan three or four days, and note that the winters are very cold.
