The Western Xia Imperial Tombs stand on a desert plain west of Yinchuan and hold nine imperial burial mounds of the Tangut kingdom, which flourished from the eleventh to thirteenth centuries before Genghis Khan destroyed it. The earthen mounds are sometimes called China’s pyramids. A site museum explains Tangut script and Buddhism. The setting under the Helan Mountains is atmospheric.
