Ta’er Monastery, also known as Kumbum, was founded in 1583 at the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, the reformer who founded the Gelug school. It is famous for butter sculptures, murals and appliqué work, and the Great Golden Tile Temple is the centre. Pilgrims circle the white stupas. Located near Huangzhong, it is a 30-minute drive from Xining.
