Datong is a former capital in northern Shanxi with two famous Buddhist sites. The Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO site, hold more than fifty thousand statues carved into sandstone cliffs from the fifth century, while the Hanging Temple sits on a rock face near Hunyuan. The city also has a restored Ming wall. A full day covers the grottoes, and the temple needs another half day.
