Namtso, or Heavenly Lake, is a huge turquoise lake at about 4,700 metres north of Lhasa, ringed by snow peaks and prayer flags. Nomad herders graze yaks on its shores, and pilgrims circle the sacred Tashi Dor peninsula. The air is thin, so visits are usually a day trip from Lhasa after acclimatisation. Summer gives the clearest skies.
