Shangri-La, formerly Zhongdian, is a Tibetan-culture town at over 3,200 metres in north-west Yunnan. The Songzanlin Monastery, often called the little Potala, stands above the Napa lake, and the old town has a giant prayer wheel. The scenery of grasslands and yaks is a gentle introduction to the Tibetan plateau. Take it slow on arrival to adjust to the altitude.
