Simlipal is a large biosphere reserve in Mayurbhanj district, with sal forest, waterfalls and a rare black tiger. The Barehipani and Joranda falls are among the tallest in the state, and elephants, leopards and hornbills are regularly seen. The park is open from November to June, and a limited number of vehicles are allowed. Jashipur is the usual base.
