Central Java tour packages are the cultural heart of the island, home to Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, and a Javanese court tradition that is still alive. The royal city of Surakarta (Solo) has palaces and batik, Semarang is a port city with Dutch-era streets, and the high Dieng Plateau has volcanic lakes and Hindu temples older than Prambanan. Off the coast, the Karimunjawa Islands offer snorkelling. Allow four to five days, and travel between May and September for the driest weather.

May to September is the driest and most comfortable season, ideal for sunrise at Borobudur and the Dieng highlands. Dieng can drop close to freezing in July and August.
Three days cover Borobudur, Solo and Semarang. Add two for the Dieng Plateau or the Karimunjawa Islands.
Fly to Jakarta, then take a domestic flight or train to Semarang, Solo or Yogyakarta. Many travellers reach Borobudur from Yogyakarta airport in about 90 minutes.
