Central Kalimantan tour packages are almost always about orangutans. Tanjung Puting National Park, reached from Pangkalan Bun, is the classic Borneo experience: a slow journey up the Sekonyer River on a wooden houseboat called a klotok, with stops to see wild and semi-wild orangutans at feeding stations such as Camp Leakey. Palangka Raya is the quiet provincial capital with peat forests nearby. April to October is the best time to go.

April to October is the drier period and the best time for river cruises. Orangutan sightings at feeding stations are reliable through much of the year.
A two-night klotok trip is the typical minimum. Allow four days in total to include travel from Jakarta.
Fly to Jakarta and take a domestic flight to Pangkalan Bun's Iskandar Airport, with a short drive to Kumai harbour. Most of the trip is arranged by local operators.
