Malang and Batu offer a cool climate and colonial streets, Tumpak Sewu is a curtain waterfall, and Surabaya is the province’s busy capital. Four to six days work well, and the dry months of May to September are best.

May to September is the dry season and offers clear sunrise views at Bromo. Mornings at the volcanoes are cold, so wear warm layers.
Three days cover Bromo and Malang. Add two more for the Ijen crater and Banyuwangi.
Fly to Jakarta, Singapore or Bali and take a domestic flight to Surabaya's Juanda Airport. From Surabaya, Bromo is about four hours by road.
